First Gokongwei Brothers Foundation Young Scientist Award

The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation (GBF) honored 12 aspiring scientists who will represent the Philippines in in the prestigious Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).

Finalists of DepEd’s 2019 National Science and Technology Fair, the students were sent off last Friday, May 10 to the annual event. The Intel ISEF will be happening from May 12 to 17 in Phoenix, Arizona in the United States. It is the world’s largest pre-college science competition that gathers top young scientific minds from across the globe to showcase their researches on the international stage. The delegation is sponsored by the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation (GBF), the family foundation of the leaders and founders of JG Summit Holdings, Inc.

In recognition of their excellence, GBF vested the students with the first Gokongwei Brothers Young Scientist Award. The foundation also announced that they will be granting scholarships to the winners to help them pursue a degree in Science, Technology, Mathematics, or Engineering at their dream universities in the future.

“It is our privilege to be a part of the journey of these amazing researchers. Learning about their story and their aspirations, it is inspiring to know that their youth is not a stumbling block, but actually an enabler to really do what they want to do for their communities. They are a testament to the Filipino youth’s exceptional ingenuity and potential in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM),” said Grace Colet, Gokongwei Brothers Foundation executive director.

Meet the awardees
Among the best six projects heading to Intel ISEF 2019 are two Life Science researches, which explored the use of natural ingredients that could treat human and plant diseases. Taguig Science High School’s John Eric Aggarao, Kathleen Chloie Antonio, and Anna Beatriz Suavengco studied the possible organic solution to brown eye spot disease attacking Kapeng Barako plants. Meanwhile, Maria Isabel Layson of Iloilo National High School presented the antidiabetic properties of aratiles and how it can help produce dietary supplements.

In the Physical Science category, Quezon National High School’s Nathaniel Reyes demonstrated how cornstalk biochar composite can treat algae infestation in lakes and fish ponds. The team of Neil David Cayanan, Shaira Gozun, and E’van Relle Tongol of Angeles City Science High School was also a game-changer with their proposed eco-friendly alternative to acoustic panels.

The Robotics and Intelligent Machines category also saw student-researchers rise to the challenge of developing technology that are beneficial to the communities. Pangasinan National High School’s Maryjoise Karla Buan invented a device that can detect illegal logging activities in forest areas. On the team division, Alpha Acain, Lester Sabadao, and Lia Denise Tan of Cagayan National High School designed a prototype that can assist farmers in drying and storing their rice harvests.

“Just like their passion to develop innovations that could really impact their communities, GBF is committed to support this next generation of talented Filipino scientists to help build their country and make a mark for the Philippines,” said Colet.

With advancing STEM as its core thrust, GBF is guided by its mission of building the future through education. For the past 25 years, GBF has built quality learning facilities, granted scholarships to deserving youth, supported academic institutions through endowments and donations, and created synergies geared toward promoting STEM and uplifting the Filipino.

Pursue passions with greater flexibility with Intel® Core™ i7-powered HP Pavilion x360

Nowadays, pursuing one’s passion takes more than just commitment and hard work. In a world that is connected and made smaller by the internet, it also pays to have equally hardworking and reliable devices and equipment that can help you continuously improve your craft, learn and develop new skills, and reach out to other people who share your interests.

Recently, HP Philippines introduced the Pavilion x360, its latest flagship laptop that boasts of power and unmatched flexibility to help young individuals further pursue their passions and aspirations, in more ways than one.

At a YOUnique Gathering at the Yardstick Coffee in Makati City, HP Philippines welcomed some of the country’s leading bloggers and gave them a first-time, first-hand experience of how the HP Pavilion x360—featuring the latest technology and an ultrathin and light design—is made flexible so passion-driven individuals like them can truly have the means to pursue their interests and freedom to express their individuality, through different points of view.

“HP Pavilion x360 combines power and flexibility not only to meet the discriminating needs of goal-oriented individuals, but also to make it more convenient for them to achieve their passions, no matter where they are, through whatever way they want,” said Dos Roque, HP Philippines Marketing Manager for Personal Systems. “With the HP Pavilion x360 laptop, passionate people now have more power and flexibility in their hands to accomplish goals that they have set for themselves.”

Expressing one’s passion in the internet
The event showcased an intimate audience discussion on expressing one’s passion in the digital age. YouTube influencers Kali Vidanes, Nate Punzalan and Nadine Felice led the conversation as they shared insights on new ways of establishing one’s uniqueness on social media through their passions.

HP also invited the bloggers to express their passion and uniqueness, and test the reliability and flexibility of the HP Pavilion x360 by asking them to create on-the-spot YouTube videos, artistic sketches and drawings, and Instagram-worthy photos using the latest HP laptops in the YOUnique video, design and photo booths.

Among those who made the rounds of the YOUnique booths were Kali, Nate and Nadine, who guested in each other’s vlogs covering the event, entirely created and uploaded using the HP Pavilion x360.

As a highlight of the launch event, a “Passion Show” was held where all the unique content created by the bloggers was showcased, to celebrate their individuality and the flexibility of the HP Pavilion x360.

Achieving one’s passion with flexibility
For people who are always on the go, the HP Pavilion x360 is a convertible personal computer that can serve as a laptop and a tablet. A durable 360-degree geared hinge lets you easily use the HP Pavilion in four modes—work in laptop mode, watch in stand mode, play in tent mode, and write or draw in tablet mode.

The HP Pavilion x360 PC has a micro-edge bezel design which makes the 14-inch screen seem bigger, for a more immersive viewing experience, especially when you need to watch DIY videos and other self-help content to continuously improve your craft. The Full HD IPS touchscreen also helps you navigate sites with ease.

Running on up to 8th generation Intel® Core™ i7 quad-core processor, INVIDIA® MX130 GDDR5 discrete graphics options and a 512GB SSD and 1TB HHD dual storage, the HP Pavilion x360 can handle numerous photo and video editing and curating tasks that come with keeping an online presence and engaging people about your passion and aspirations. On select models, there is the 16GB of Intel® Optane™ memory for storage acceleration.

The HP Pavilion x360 is available in Pale Gold, Sapphire Blue, Natural Silver, and Mineral Silver colors for only P62,990 at all authorized HP reseller outlets nationwide.

Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2019

Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series divers, Orlando Duque (COL), Rhiannan Iffland (AUS), and Xantheia Pennisi (AUS) held a special media gathering and workshop at the Rizal Memorial Complex, Pasay City. The event was hosted by Eleanor Townsend Smart (USA), Red Bull Cliff Diving Athlete and founder of the Clean Cliffs Project. Together, the athletes introduced their sport to those in attendance and shared their experiences from previous competitions.

After a short question and answer session with the nation’s leading news outlets, the divers gave a glimpse of what to expect at the first stop of the 2019 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in El Nido.

“It’s a big challenge of mine to break my personal best again,” says Rhiannan Iffland. “Scoring consistently higher at each event is the one thing I want to focus on this year.”

As a veteran of the sport, Duque’s goal for this 2019 season is a bit more conservative, stating that he wants to “just hang in there one more season and then say goodbye.”

Xantheia Pennisi, the 1st competitor of Filipino descent to compete in the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, is excited to be back in the Philippines after 7 years. A newcomer to the sport, Pennisi is ready to showcase her skills in front of her family, stating “I feel very special to be representing Australia and the Philippines.” She goes on to say, “My goal is to place in the top 5 at all the competitions. I know my Filipino family are all supporting me, and I want to dive for them and make them proud.”

Smart, Duque, Iffland, and Pennisi then took the time to share their knowledge with members of the Philippine National Diving Team for an in-depth diving workshop. This allowed members of the National Team to improve their takeoffs and dive executions by learning from four of the world’s most decorated high divers.

“We’re excited to share the morning with Orlando, Rhiannan, Xantheia, and Eleanor,” shares Marie Dimanche, Chairman of the Philippine National Diving Team. “Having an international event of this scope in the country will go a very long way in recognizing high diving as a premier sport.”

The upcoming 11th season of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series opens in El Nido, Palawan, on April 12th, 2019, in Miniloc Island’s Big and Small Lagoons. Twenty-four (24) professional male and female divers from eighteen (18) countries will take off from breath-taking heights of up to 27 meters with only their concentration, skill, and physical control. El Nido will mark the first and only stop in Asia on this year’s tour.
