The Relentless Rizaly From SM Foundation scholar to SM Prime accounting manager

Twenty years ago, high school student Rizaly Lim and her four siblings would watch in awe every time they pass by the construction of the first SM City in her hometown Sta. Rosa, Laguna. All five children, packed in the tricycle their father rides for a living, were all excitedly looking forward to happy family weekends they would be spending at the huge mall.

Today, after graduating Summa Cum Laude through a scholarship from SM Foundation, Rizaly is now a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) working as Accounting Manager for the head office of SM Prime Holdings, a leading property developer in the Philippines and Southeast Asia.

From SM Foundation scholar to SM Prime accounting manager
At a young age, Rizaly was headstrong about getting her family out of poverty. She shares, “My father was the only one who worked for our family, and because we were a large family, his daily earnings as a tricycle driver were never enough.”

Rizaly finished high school at the Balibago National High School as class valedictorian in 2005 and was already sending applications for other college scholarships when her teacher asked the top 10 students to go to SM City Sta. Rosa for an interview with SM Foundation.

“Sa umpisa, hindi po ako naniwala kasi bago pa lang sa amin noon ang SM City Sta. Rosa,” she recalls. She proceeded of course, driven by the one goal of finishing college and helping her family. “Gusto ko rin po makapag-aral at makapagtapos noon. Maka-work at makatulong sa family.”

A few exams and interviews later, SM Foundation, Inc. (SMFI) went to visit her and her family at home to inform them that she will be receiving a full scholarship with monthly allowance until she finishes her course.

In 2010, Rizaly graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accountancy. She went on to pass the Philippine CPA Board Exams on first try in October 2010. The assistance of SMFI, she said, went beyond tuition and allowances. “With full scholarship grants and monthly allowances, as well as the opportunity to work at SM Store during our summer and Christmas vacations, the SMFI scholarship has enabled me to help my family financially.”

“I am the master of my fate”
While other parents were buying their college kids the latest Nokia phone back in the summers of 2000’s, Rizaly’s father gave her and her siblings weekly assignments to accomplish during the summer vacation. “Our late father instilled in us the love of reading and the value of studying,” she shared. “During summer, he would assign us English words and their meanings to memorize and asked us to recite these to him.“

Then there’s the memorization of motivational poems and speeches, one of which stuck with her for life: “It matters not how strait the gate, how charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.” She shared that this last stanza of “Invictus” by W.E. Henley had kept her motivated to look past the limitations of her circumstances and focus on her personal goals.

Career at SM
SM Foundation was established in 1983 by Henry Sy, Sr. and Felicidad T. Sy as the heart of the SM group. It has established programs that are focused on nurturing and caring for underserved communities where SM is present. It supports and empowers host communities through education, healthcare, shelter, disaster response, sustainable agriculture, and care for persons with special needs.

To date, SM Foundation has assisted more than 8,000 college and technical/vocational students, and has donated over 100 school buildings with a total of 334 classrooms built across the country.

Nurturing the graduates extends beyond the classroom as SM Foundation also provides job opportunities across the different companies of the SM group. The foundation organizes a Career Fair specifically designed for its scholars.

From the Career Fair organized by SM Foundation, Rizaly was able to get job offers from three companies – among which was SM Prime Holdings, one of the largest integrated property developers in Southeast Asia that offers innovative and sustainable lifestyle cities with the development of malls, residences, offices, hotels and convention centers. It is also the largest, in terms of asset, in the Philippines.

I still want to level up
“I haven’t accomplished much yet, but I value what I have already accomplished and received so far,” said Rizaly, referring to the highest honors she has received in high school and college, becoming a CPA, and being promoted to manager in within only a few years of her work at SM Prime. “These are just a few of the accomplishments for which I will be eternally grateful. I’m also proud of my daily achievements at work, such as fulfilling particular duties assigned to me. They make me happy and proud of myself, and they inspire me to do better.”

“Ang mga dating pinapangarap ko lang, nagagawa ko na ngayon,” Rizaly said as she related how she has been able to travel to Taiwan for vacation and do the tri-city tour of Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. But her biggest dreams, she said, remain centered on her family: to provide better for her family by sharing with them what she has now. “Nothing is simple. Nothing is easy. Hindi ko naman to straight line lang na na-achieve. Life is full of challenges. Just stay strong, keep the faith and always give your best effort.”

Pru Life UK extends free COVID-19 protection sign-up offer until June 15 for Filipinos through health app, Pulse

Leading life insurer Pru Life UK is extending its free COVID-19 protection and Personal Accident (PA) coverage sign-up offer until June 15, 2020 through Pulse, an artificial intelligence-powered health and wellness app that offers holistic health management.

Pru Life UK is keen to protect more Filipinos, particularly health workers, with its free COVID-19 protection and PA coverage — a one-time, 45-day insurance against the unfortunate event that the individual passes away as a result of COVID-19 or an accident. This limited, exclusive offer is available to the first 500,000 persons who register their profiles on the Pulse app until June 15, 2020. The coverage is effective from the date of registration.

Filipinos, aged 18 to 64 and residing in the Philippines, who have registered for this offer on the Pulse app will be entitled to a death benefit or lump sum amount of Php 100,000 for the bereaved family if the insured passes away due to accident, or as a result of COVID-19, subject to terms and conditions. No purchase of any insurance product is required. Health workers are entitled to twice the COVID-19 death benefit or up to Php 200,000 at no cost. A Php 10,000 burial benefit will be added if the death is due to illnesses or natural causes, and not due to an accident.

The free COVID-19 insurance is primarily aimed at supporting health workers who are at the frontlines in their efforts to help curb the spread of the disease. These include, but are not limited to, health professionals, associates, community health service workers, as well as health management and support staff.

To register for the offer, eligible Filipinos must download the free Pulse app from Google Play Store and Apple App Store. New Pulse app registrants are required to create an account, complete their user profiles, and register for the free COVID-19 offer on the app. Existing Pulse registrants would have received an in-app notification directing them to complete their profiles and register for the free COVID-19 protection. A confirmation email is sent to the covered person upon successful registration. The covered person will also be able to name and update their beneficiaries through the Pulse app within the 45-day coverage period. A 45-day extension for policyowners whose plans have lapsed will be available soon.

Those who have been diagnosed with, have symptoms of, have been under quarantine for COVID-19, or have been living with a COVID-19 patient at the time of registration are not eligible for this offer. Other excluded conditions are listed in the terms and conditions of the product.

More protection initiatives for Filipinos

The complimentary COVID-19 protection and PA coverage is one of the several initiatives of Pru Life UK to help protect Filipinos at the height of this public health emergency.

Teleperformance’s COTW volunteers practice Bayanihan in face of COVID-19

Employee-volunteers of Teleperformance Philippines from across the company’s 21 business sites were together in their mission to extend bayanihan to communities needing help. Through Citizen of the World (COTW) Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of Teleperformance, volunteers pooled their efforts and were able to distribute over P1 million worth of assistance to various beneficiaries.

TP employees’ bayanihan donations enabled the Foundation to purchase PPEs and other supplies amounting to over P500,000 donated to three major health institutions, namely, Philippine General Hospital (Luzon), Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (Visayas), and Southern Philippines Medical Center (Mindanao).

Meanwhile, each family residing in the Teleperformance-Gawad Kalinga Village in Tanay, Rizal received one month’s worth of assorted grocery items. The grocery fundraising was supported by the entire Philippines leadership team with both their volunteer time and funds raised by leadership.

All in all, over P500,000 worth of grocery items were given to help alleviate the situation for the one hundred families in the village that was also built by COTW volunteers for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy.

COTW volunteers also responded to the call of its program partner-beneficiary Kythe Foundation, which cares for cancer-stricken kids and their families. Kythe hoped to alleviate some of the anxieties of their beneficiaries during this tough situation and COTW sponsored meals for 100 pediatric patients in different Kythe-affiliated hospitals.

Meanwhile, as a member of the Contact Center Association of the Philippines (CCAP), Teleperformance Philippines supported the association’s industry-wide donation drive to support Caritas Manila’s “Protect the Poor from COVID-19” program, which aims to assist poor families by providing them health and personal hygiene essentials, as well as food packs. TP sponsored 50 families with its donation.

“Nobody has had an easy time during this unprecedented crisis. But as Teleperformance Citizen of the World volunteers, we know that wherever we are, we can still do something to help someone in need,” Jeffrey Johnson, Senior Vice President of Human Capital Resource Management said.

The continuous outpouring of donations from volunteers is expected to reach another P1 million in the following weeks, and these will also be distributed immediately to communities in need.

“I can see that the concept of bayanihan is deeply rooted in the Teleperformance culture, so it is really easy for our volunteers to step up and help others. I am very proud to be part of this caring and generous team,” he said.

Kapuso star Bianca Umali visits children affected by Taal Volcano eruption

Bianca Umali joined child-focused NGO World Vision in Laurel, Batangas last February 7 to visit and help distribute learners’ kits to about 400 school-aged children from Grade 1 to 7. Each kit contains a school bag, school supplies, and art materials to help hundreds of children who temporarily stopped schooling due to the eruption.

As World Vision’s Youth Ambassador for Education, Bianca Umali hoped to inspire the children with a message of hope amidst difficult times brought by Taal Volcano eruption.

As Taal Volcano still indicates signs of volcanic threat to its surrounding communities, World Vision commits to assist affected families, including thousands of children whose schooling have been disrupted for almost a month.

Nine year old Jhylian from the locked-down village of Buso-buso said, “I used to have 10 notebooks but after Taal erupted, most of my school things were destroyed. Now, I only have three notebooks for nine subjects. I’m worried what I will use after I’ve used up all the pages of my three notebooks.”

According to the Department of Education’s (DEPED) report, at least 575,456 students coming from 1,034 schools are affected due to class suspensions.

“Education in emergencies is crucial. A lot of children were not able to spare their bags or notebooks and worse, could not go back to their school because of the damages caused by the eruption. This should not stop them from learning though and that’s where we all come in – to support them in any way possible to keep them in school,” says World Vision National Director Rommel Fuerte.

“We are grateful to Bianca for making time to serve with us, despite her hectic schedule. The children and the people of Laurel are certainly encouraged and touched by her,” added Fuerte.

Since 2017, Umali has been an active advocate and generous supporter to various World Vision’s campaigns for the benefit of children. Months ago, Umali offered her voice and influence to promote the “1,000 Girls” campaign and the “Hope Town” experiential booth at the Trinoma Mall in Quezon City.

To date, World Vision has reached 1,845 families with hygiene kits (soaps, undergarments, etc.) and non-food items (mosquito nets, blanket, and plastic mats). 12,000 individuals also received N95 dust masks while at least 4 child-friendly spaces continue to provide psychosocial support to children in evacuation centers.
