Pru Life UK fetes national cycling champs off to Prudential RideLondon 2018

Cycling national champions Jermyn Prado, Ismael Grospe, Jeremy Maraña, and Aidan Mendoza are all set to see action in Prudential RideLondon 2018, the world’s largest cycling festival, over the weekend of 28-29 July 2018 in the capital of the United Kingdom. They, together with other winners from the local cycling event PRUride PH 2018 which took place earlier this year and Pru Life UK’s employee representative, will form the eight-strong official delegation to represent the country.

Backed annually since 2013 by Pru Life UK’s parent company as the title sponsor, British financial services giant Prudential plc, Prudential RideLondon is expected to see more than 100,000 participants cycling more than three million miles in seven different events.

Headlining the delegation is Prado, who was named double-gold national champion for winning both of PRUride PH 2018’s Philippine National Road Race Championships Women’s Elite and Criterium Women’s Elite. She will be representing the country in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100-mile event.
Meanwhile, Grospe, who participated in last year’s Prudential RideLondon as a rising 18-year-old cyclist, is making a return this year, but now as a national champion for Philippine National Road Race Championships Men’s Elite U-23. He will join the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 46-mile event.

Rounding out the lineup are Maraña and Mendoza who are national champions for Individual Time Trial Women’s U-23 and Criterium Men’s U-23, respectively. Brompton Challenge winner Jun Minagawa is also with the group to represent the country in the exciting Brompton World Championship.

Pru Life UK employee and cycling hobbyist Ryan Lamayo will join other employees from Prudential’s business units in Asia to ride the Surrey 100-mile event. Also with the delegation are PRUride PH 2018 raffle winners John Kenneth Cruz and Bertrand Tepltixky.

“We are proud that aside from having our largest delegation from the Philippines to date – with eight strong and highly competitive cyclists ready to overcome the challenges of the long ride – they are the Filipinos’ champions in advocating cycling as a way of life,” said Allan Tumbaga, Pru Life UK’s Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, during the send-off celebration on July 19.

“Prudential RideLondon banners cycling across London to encourage healthier and more active travel, and this is what Pru Life UK wants to emulate here in the Philippines. We hope to help raise awareness on cycling as an alternative mode of transportation so we can all work towards having a healthy, safe and environment-friendly community for generations to come,” he continued.

This is the third year that Pru Life UK will be sending an official delegation to the Prudential RideLondon. The Company has been advocating cycling since its maiden cycling event in 2016. It eventually became the country’s largest cycling festival as PRUride PH 2018 where over 2,000 participants saw action over the two-weekend festivities in January this year.

The delegation will fly to London via the Philippine Airlines, Pru Life UK’s official airline partner.

Phenom to Represent Philippines at Global Red Bull Reign Finals

June 30th, 2018, sixteen teams, finalists from the previous Qualifiers (Manila A, Manila B, Last Chance), went head-to-head at the Red Bull Reign Finals at Taft Food by the Court in Pasay City. Phenom emerged as the tournament winners and earned the chance to represent the Philippines at the Red Bull Reign World Finals.

Red Bull Reign is a high-endurance, offense-driven 3×3 basketball tournament that gathers the world’s top ballers to battle it out for the chance to compete at the World Finals in Washington, DC, USA. The rules are simple: the team that scores the most overall points in each round will advance until only one team remains.

The final sixteen teams consisted of:

• LGU
• PACITA
• SOULDIER
• Kervy
• LA
• Team Kate
• Better Basketball PH
• VVEstrada
• Sy Men
• HumKins
• Phenom
• King of Hoops
• Evogen
• Tough Gear C
• Tough Gear A
• 7 Eleven

The event kicked off with the Last Chance Qualifier that enabled Phenom to advance to the Finals later that afternoon. Over the course of the day, each team collided in a series of round-robin style matches, intensified by familiar players like former NCAA player from Lyceum of the Philippines – Seraj Elmejrab of team PACITA, former UAAP player from UST Growling Tigers – John Jordan Sta. Ana of team Phenom, and Senior Board Member of Ilocos Norte – Matthew Marcos Manotoc of LGU.

“It’s super robust. Everywhere, you have people playing basketball – old to young, good to not very good, it’s always been a very healthy basketball scene,” says Manotoc. “Probably one of the most vibrant in the world, very proud of the basketball scene, and Red Bull Reign is just a testament to that.”

Red Bull Reign progressed into the semi-finals, which saw three rounds of competitive back-to-back contests between Phenom, Souldier, and LGU.

Despite delays due to the weather throughout the day, Phenom and LGU later advanced to the finals with a score of 46-to-50. Both teams collided on the court but Phenom would emerge as the Philippine Champions, at a score of 10-to-06. The winning team included team captain, Carl Kenneth Sumalacan, Jarrold Flores, John Rom Alvarado, and John Jordan Sta. Ana.

“Today was extremely difficult, it was as if we went through the eye of a needle. They were all skilled and hungry to win,” shares Sumalacan. “We are happy and at the same time, excited. We were constantly worn out, but it was all worth it.”For the second year in a row, PBA legend Vince Hizon oversaw Red Bull Reign as tournament director. “We’re really trying to get bigger and better every year. And I think we’re definitely doing that,” says Hizon. “Red Bull truly made a big presence here and what’s nice is the homegrown presence. So hopefully, Phenom represents us well in Washington D.C., and we’re praying for the best.”

According to sports consultant, Al Delos Reyes, “What’s good about Red Bull Reign is that it opens another door for amateurs who, even though haven’t been part of any basketball professional leagues, get the chance to represent the Philippines against 60+ countries. And it’s on, Phenom is flying to Washington, D.C. later this year!”

Following their hard fought victory at the second annual Red Bull Reign, Phenom will represent the Philippines at the World Finals in Washington DC, USA, later this year.

Reef invites everyone to embrace the fun, freedom and spirit of the beach with ‘Beach Freely’

Reef, the industry leader in beach and surf footwear, is launching its new brand mantra that seeks to unite the world around the fun, freedom and spirit of the beach – Beach Freely.

Beach Freely encourages everyone who steps into the sand or into Reef products to experience the beach in their own way – whether that’s surfing, barbecuing, swimming and enjoying other water sports – and take that fun spirit of the beach with them wherever they go.

With its pristine white sand beaches and surfing spots hailed around the globe as some of the world’s finest, the Philippines has a vibrant beach-loving and surfing community who were there to witness the launch of the campaign at Alabang Town Center. Featuring games, music and all the other things that makes beach parties memorable, Reef invited the crowd to get into the Breach Freely spirit.

The event also kicked off the launch of “Local’s Perspective” – the first Philippine Surf Book to be published. Created in collaboration with Reef’s long-time partner, My Life on Board, the book
compiled the best surf images together with some of the finest wave chasers of our time, not only in the Philippines, but also across Asia – immortalizing those moments and telling the story of the history and culture of the locals who shaped the Asian surfing scene.

The book features images from the best surf photographers in Asia and Oceana like Giang Wardani from Batu Karas in West Java Indonesia, Bali based National Geographic photographer Tommy Schultz, Mentawai Island based surf photographer from Japan Hatsumi Ishibashi, World Longboard Championship Chaplain and photographer Andrew Carruthers from Australia and Siagrao based surf photographer Oliver Bayer.

It also highlights work from the Philippines’ own local surf photographers like Red Bull Ilume finalists and Sony World Photography National Award winner Gaps Sabuero, surf photographer from Samar Abdel Elecho, La Union based surfer and photographer Jeferson Ganuelas, Baler Based surf photographer JP Sarmiento and My Life on Board founder Mike Eijansantos.
Lovers of Reef can look forward to feeling this new, invigorated spirit in Reef’s latest products.

Perfect for surfers who are feeling the heat this summer, Reef’s perforated boadshorts feature light breathable polyester fabric created from woven soluble yarn and have perforated holes allow for water and air to freely pass through the fabric, speeding up the dry time and enhancing breathability. Complete with a zipper closure back pocket, key loop and non-velcro fly make this perfect for surf or other high intensity water sport.

For the trendy beach-goer, Reef has created a slimmer, sleeker version of the ever-popular Fanning sandal. The Fanning Low has the same all-day comfort, arch support, and thirst quenching technology as the Fanning; but with slimmer straps and a lower side profile for a more youthful and fun vibe.

The Fanning Low has a super soft yet supportive EVA footbed, an airbag under the heel for even more support, and a rubber outsole for top of the line traction and durability – and it even has a bottle opener to ensure you are always able to quench your thirst! The new Fanning Low will be available in 6 six fun colors, right in time for one’s next beach adventure.

The new mantra also lends itself to the Reef’s updated impact strategy to help keep beaches clean for everyone to enjoy. Environmental and social impact has been a priority for Reef since the company’s founding in 1984 and has continued to grow throughout the years through the global Reef WeHeart program.

Here in the Philippines, Reef continued to promote responsible travel and environmental conservation in Free the Sea Movement 2, a fun-filled three day event and coastal clean-up in Baler done in partnership with WWF Philippines.

Reef pledges to support efforts to preserve and restore beaches so that everyone has the opportunity to Beach Freely.

Pru Life UK gears up for the biggest cycling festival with PRUride PH 2018

British life insurer Pru Life UK aims to start the new year with a bang with the launch of PRUride PH 2018, expected to be one of the biggest cycling events in the Philippines.

Following the success of PRUride to London in 2016, the 2018 installment is set to gather some of the national team cyclists from the country and across Southeast Asia with two competition legs – January 11 to 14, 2018 at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone in Zambales, and January 21 at McKinley West, Taguig.

At a media launch held at The Brewery in Uptown Bonifacio, Pru Life UK SVP and Chief Marketing Officer Allan Tumbaga shares, “More than a gathering of the country’s most passionate cyclists, PRUride PH 2018 continues Pru Life UK’s commitment to promote responsible and safe cycling. We also hope to increase awareness on cycling as an alternative mode of transportation so we can all work towards having a safe and environment-friendly community for the generations to come.”

PRUride PH 2018 promises to be one of the most exciting cycling and sporting events in the coming year. Here are the top three things that professional and amateur cyclists can look forward to.

Two weekends with a line-up of 36 racing activities

With more than 5,000 participants expected to sign up, Pru Life UK arranged several racing segments to cater to a wider range of cyclists, from amateur and age-group riders to Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) license holders. Among the activities included are the Professional Individual Time Trial, Amateur Time Trial, and the 100-kilometer Gran Fondo – all to be held in Subic – and a repeat of the 2016 Criterium races in Taguig.

24623819_1659299774090425_1116183453_o

Seasoned cyclists – including national athletes Marella Salamat and George Oconer – can put their skills to test at the PRUride Professional Road Race, a UCI-accredited (class B) event and a platform for young athletes aspiring to be in the national cycling team to show off their talents. It will also take UCI license holders and elite professionals to a 160-kilometer course, leading them to the historic peak of Mount Samat in the town of Pilar, Province of Bataan.

Likewise, cyclists of all expertise levels are also expected to flock at the PRUride Gran Fondo, which will bring them into the picturesque roads of Bataan province on a leisurely but timed 100-kilometer ride.

A uniquely Filipino Brompton Challenge

PRUride PH 2018 will also bring in the popular and exciting Brompton Challenge to the country for the very first time. The Challenge will showcase its two main events which will definitely bring laughter, if not tears, to both spectators and participants alike.
The Slowest Lap Challenge is a test of balance where the slowest participant to cross the finish line without stepping on the ground wins the event. On the other hand, the Brompton Criterium, which utilizes the folding bikes of its namesake, is a 30-minute race with two laps.
As the British brand Brompton is marketed as a bike for urban commuters, participants are required to wear a formal top and will begin with their bikes folded at the starting line. At the sound of the horn, participants will run, unfold their bikes and ride. The local Brompton Criterium will be flavored with a Filipino twist and will require riders to wear a barong tagalog or Filipiniana top.
Exclusive and big ticket prizes

This year’s prize pool has increased to a total of more than PhP 1 million worth of cash prizes. PhP 50,000 is at stake for the top finishers of all Elite professional categories for both men and women.

Moreover, six all-expense-paid trips to London will be given away, including two for the grand winners of the men and women Elite Criterium in McKinley West, and two for the men and women Professional Road Race winners in Subic. Two trips will also be raffled off during the Bike Community Days in both locations.

All participants of the event will also get a limited-edition PRUride PH 2018 jersey and all finishers will be awarded with a finisher medal.

PRUride PH 2018 is held in partnership with Integrated Cycling Federation of the Philippines, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, National Bicycle Organization, and the local government unit of the Province of Bataan. Learn more about the event and register by logging on to http://pruride.ph.

Reef promotes responsible travel through “Free the Sea Movement 2” in Baler

Reef, a surf and lifestyle brand known worldwide, is once again promoting responsible travel and environmental conservation in partnership with WWF Philippines as it hosts Free the Sea Movement 2 this September 29 until October 1 , 2017.

This year set in Baler, Aurora, one of the country’s top hotspots for surfing, the exciting three-day event treated guests to a slew of fun activities that had them riding the waves while helping to preserve the beauty of Sabang Beach.

Free the Sea 2 opened with a coastal clean-up and talk from WWF Philippines on sustainable tourism, a cause near and dear to Reef’s heart as it is in line with Reef’s global humanitarian outreach campaign “We Heart.”

“As travelers, we may be just passing through other beaches and cities but through our We Heart campaign, we want to educate people on the importance of leaving a positive impact on the local communities we visit,”

“With more and more travelers discovering the beauty of our islands and with the rise of local tourism, now is a good time for us to educate people on the environmental impact tourism has and how we all need to work together maintain our beaches so people can continue to enjoy them for years to come,” Marnelli Gaerlan, Marketing Head for Reef, shared.

Together with WWF, Surfari Philippines and volunteers, Reef spearheaded the coastal clean-up that aims to restore and preserve the beauty of Sabang Beach. Afterwards, guests then got to enjoy what Sabang Beach was famous for – amazing waves and surfing!

Volunteers got the chance to reconnect with nature and learn how to surf with free surfing lessons conducted by Nalu Surf Camp.

In the evening, they were also treated to laid-back beachside music with performances from Soundcloud Philippines’ Ann Clerigo, the soulful music of Banna Harbera, and an open mic show which include the turnover of Reef’s donation to WWF, amounting to P30,000, which would go towards WWF’s environmental programs.

The next day opened with even more to offer surfing enthusiasts, as they witness the Surfari Beginners’ Competition, followed by a festive After Party which capped the weekend.

Aside from receiving their well-earned awards, surfers alongside the volunteers jammed to the sound of indie rapper Eazyhead, party-starter remixes and originals from DJ Doms Badwolf & DJ CC – the perfect end to a beautiful beach day in Baler!

“We are really excited for this year’s Free the Sea Movement. Baler is the perfect setting for us to promote responsible travel and environmental conservation, while at the same time, giving everyone a taste of what they can enjoy if we remember to care of our beaches – which is delicious local food and music, white beaches, clear water and of course, gigantic waves and surfing like no other!” Gaerlan said.

Reef’s ‘Free the Sea Movement: Baler” was sponsored by Juan Light Studio, Bike King’s Kitchen, Madison’s Cafe Baler, La Patricia Hotel, Baler and The Shack, Baler with music partners Ann Clerigo, Banna Harbera, Eazyhead, DJ Domes Badwolf and DJ CC.
