FILIPINO BARTENDERS COMPETE IN THE FINAL DIAGEO RESERVE WORLD CLASS CHALLENGE

The last challenge leg of Diageo Reserve World Class 2016 ended on a flavorful note last May 12 at Solaire Resort and Casino.

Diageo Reserve World Class is the cocktail industry’s most renowned and respected mixology training programme and competition worldwide. This 2016, the world’s best bartenders will pit their skills, impeccable techniques, and knowledge against each other in front of experts in the global bartending industry.

The third and biggest challenge round for the prestigious Diageo World Class Bartender of the Year 2016 followed the theme “Cuisine Meat Cocktails”- a feast of savory flavors and the world’s finest Scotch whiskies. The challenge ushered in #LoveScotch – a global movement that promotes Scotch whisky’s unique style, substance, and flavor.

Competing bartenders made use of Diageo Reserve’s portfolio of Scotch whisky: Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve, Johnnie Walker Platinum Label, Johnnie Walker Blue Label, Singleton of Glen Ord, Glenkinchie, Cragganmore, Talisker, Lagavulin, and Caol Ila in their cocktails.

20 of Manila’s top mixologists served scrumptious creations that surprised the senses with unthinkable ingredients by balancing savory tastes to the diverse flavor profiles of Scotch whisky. The “Cuisine Meat Cocktails” challenge was a test of integrating food elements while putting together exceptional cocktails.

“This batch was truly exceptional. The bartenders did a great job this year,” said Marie Ona, Diageo Reserve Philippines Luxury Manager. “All three winners demonstrated unique talents and the promise to make a difference in Miami later on this year, taking advantage of food trends to create their winning cocktails.”

Offering their discerning palates to the competition were judges Will Thompson, Global Ambassador for Don Julio Tequila; Hannah Waters, presenter and bartender for Tales of the Cocktails; and Ray Reyes, food and travel blogger of lynne-enroute.com. Diageo Reserve Brand Ambassador Rian Asiddao hosted the competition.

The top 4 bartenders will represent the Philippines at the regional finals in Bali, Indonesia in late May. They will also receive premium prizes from Diageo and BevTools. The winners of the regional finals will then go on to compete in the Global Finals in Miami, Florida, where they will have the opportunity to learn from the industry’s most renowned figures and gain access to exclusive World Class tools and workshops.

Every year, Diageo Reserve World Class continues to grow, with more and more countries adapting the training program and joining the World Class Bartender of the Year Competition. Now on its eighth year globally, World Class continues to elevate the craft, innovation, and creativity within the cocktail industry. This is the fourth year the Philippines is participating with the biggest batch thus far with contenders hailing from Manila’s finest bars.

Fighting the guerrillas –apart from the Japanese regular forces – were the Japanese-formed Bureau of Constabulary (latertaking the name of the old Philippine Constabulary during the Second Republic), Kempeitai (theJapanese military police), and the Makapili (Filipinos fighting for the Japanese). Post-war studiesestimate that around 260,000 persons were organized under guerrilla groups and that membersof anti-Japanese underground organizations were more numerous. Such was their effectivenessthat by the end of World War II, Japan controlled only twelve of the forty-eight provinces. The Battle of Corregidor, fought May 5–6, 1942, was the culmination of the Japanese campaignfor the conquest of the Commonwealth of the Philippines during World War II.

This year’s race is a two-day event set for runners, individual and team, of different distancecategories. The race is divided into four different categories: Day 1 is set for the runners for theGuerilla Sprint which is a 5 km with 12 obstacles waiting for them in the course and the GuerillaWarrior who will conquer the 10 km run with 24 obstacles to face. Avida Towers Prime Taft celebrates vibrant lifestyles in the heart of Manila

In today’s ever-increasing vibrant world, an ideal work-live-play lifestyle is hinged on having everything within quick and convenient reach, where driving passions and achieving goals means living at the center of the bustling metropolis.

At the heart of Manila, Taft is one distinct area that has never ceased to develop and constantly evolve with the demands of changing times, making it an ideal community, even for younger generations of urban dwellers.

The Taft district connects three major cities—Manila, Makati, and Pasay—serving as a gateway to some of the biggest commercial, business, lifestyle and cultural hubs in the metro.

As a center of everything in the metro, Taft has been thriving for decades, with throngs of people converging in the area daily on their way to nearby schools and markets, central business districts, commercial and cultural centers, and manufacturing and industrial areas.

Avida realizes the potential of Taft’s strategic location to a growing number of urbanites and has developed the Avida Towers Prime Taft in a secure community along Taft Avenue.

This masterfully-designed and well-appointed three-tower high-rise property will offer young urban professionals and their families an inspiring haven where they can kick off their activities or a restful refuge where they can relax. Nestlé Health Science encourages Filipinos to opt to be active

The process of ageing begins at birth. Through the decades, science has made tremendous progress in extending human life but there is still a pressing need to prolong our active and healthy years.

As a commitment to helping Filipinos live young longer, Nestlé Health Science recently held the Opt to Be Active media roundtable discussion to share their new discoveries and secrets in nutrition and healthy ageing. Nutritionists and fitness coaches were also present in the event to help attendees assess their nutrition and health status.

Dr. Jimmy Bautista, Medical & Scientific Affairs Lead at Nestlé Health Science and Dr. Marianna Sioson, Section of Nutrition Head at The Medical City, shared how Filipinos can achieve a full and active life by making proactive choices such as maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and keeping the mind active.

In his lecture held at the Manila Diamond Hotel, Dr. Bautista stressed that the human body has two different ages—a chronological age and a biological age.

“People who optimize their health may have a biological age that is 10 years younger than their chronological age,” said Dr. Bautista. “At the same time, the presence of chronic conditions may accelerate the body’s decline, making us biologically older than our chronological age.”

Dr. Sioson, on the other hand, emphasized that it is never too early to assess if we are meeting our energy and nutrient requirements. Since the prevalence of developing malnutrition significantly increases as we grow older, there is a pressing need to start taking nutritionally complete oral supplements to continue to live a young and active lifestyle.

“We want Filipinos to ask themselves if there is a need for them to optimize their health and nutrient intake so that they can achieve a full life,” said Dr. Sioson.

Where nutrition becomes therapy

Filipinos often find themselves caught in a battle between indulging and being healthy and, more often than not, the earlier prevails. This gives rise to lifestyle-related, non-communicable diseases (NCD). In a report by the World Health Organization, NCDs account for 61 percent of total deaths in the country. The organization defines non-communicable diseases as chronic diseases that are not passed from person to person. NCDs are grouped into four main types—cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes.

Simple lifestyle changes like preparing healthy meals and optimizing your nutrient intake can be the body’s best defenses against these diseases.

Nestlé Health Science champions this approach by providing novel ways to bridge the gap between nutrition and therapy. The health science arm of the leading global nutrition, health and wellness company strongly believes that the food we consume on a daily basis is the largest single influence on our health.

“By shifting the way people manage health and nutrition, we have the force to improve lives around the world because beyond medicine, there is nutritional therapy,” said Nestlé Health Science

Country Business Manager Angela Sison. “This is what is considered the point where scientific research meets human insight.”

Formed in 2011, Nestlé Health Science is an innovative and fundamentally different type of health science company that is focused specifically on advancing nutritional therapy to change the course of health.
