Expressing the Joy with Food Is Actually Good for our Kids, we develop them and discover more!

It’s a tale as old as time. Kids poke, squash, and tear apart their food while parents tell them off to stop playing with the food. It can be messy after all, sometimes even wasteful. But did you know that letting your children have fun with their food is actually good for them? Yes, and it’s a fact supported by research studies, even. According to the Developmental Science journal, letting your children treat their food and snacks creatively can actually help withearly brain development. How? By exposing the kids to stimuli (for example, food textures) and concepts that are important during their developmental stage. The approach also supposedly encourages kids’ general creativity because they are allowed to treat their food however they want. Moreover, research studies from the De Montfort University also state that encouraging kids to treat their food like art actually encourages them to develop good eating habits! Findings show that those who were encouraged to explore and handle their food are less likely to develop neophobia (aka picky eating) because they were given the space for food acceptance and exploration. This is definitely big news for those who have always struggled in making their children eat. As parents, our first instinct is to ask if a meal or a snack is healthy and delicious. Now, these studies suggest that while taste does play a role in encouraging kids to appreciate a meal, it is their ability to touch and handle them themselves that inspires them to snack on them later since it makes them overcome their resistance to them in their own terms. With this information out now, what can a parent do? – Well, why not expose your kids to innovative food products that will stimulate their creativity and ingenuity? Thankfully, there are snacks like Gardenia’s Pocket Sandwich, a ready-to-go snack of freshly sealed goodness perfect for merienda, that now comes in double flavors. Who would have thought that you can have a sealed sandwich, much more have it in double flavors? The snack–which is made of two creamy white bread with yummy fillings–comes in different flavors that are made to appeal to kids’ palate. Parents can choose from their two new double-flavored variants White Chocolate& Blueberry and Raspberry & Peanut Butter or go for the classic, single flavors like Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Strawberry Pastillas, and Cheese. In addition to this, every pack of Pocket Sandwich is filled with vitamins A, B1, and B2, as well as minerals like iron which are good for the eyes and the release of energy, respectively. But it’snot only those that make this a perfect pocketable merienda for children AND parents. They can
actually be a pretty good canvass for food discovery, too–just toast them, fold them, and squeeze to really appreciate the tasty fillings in each sandwich! More importantly, parents can now cut down their brainstorming and food prep time with these snacks and use their free hours discovering with their children. Kids will always be curious and adventurous in this stage and now you can spend your time discovering and helping them unleash their talents by making snack time easy, convenient, tasty, and creative. Now, whoever said creativity and food can’t go together? For parents out there, you can now start your food discovery journey by grabbing a few packs of Gardenia’s Pocket Sandwich. It’s available in all leading groceries nationwide for only PHP 12.75 SRP for double-flavored variants and PHP12.00 SRP for single flavors. In 2014, audiences first saw Angelina Jolie take on the role of the Disney’s most notoriousvillain, Maleficent. The film offered another perspective to the traditional fairytale that placed thespotlight on the events that drove her to curse a newborn baby princess to sleep forever. Thefilm put a fresh spin on the traditional fairy tale with a villain as the story’s protagonist. This year, Jolie wears her cloak and puts on her horns once again as she reprises her iconiccharacter in Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Oscar® and three-time Golden Globe®winning actress returns for the fantasy-adventure sequel that picks up several years after thefirst film and continues to explore the complex relationship between her and Princess Aurora(Elle Fanning). Jolie shares, “These Disney films are always big and beautiful which is one of the reasons whyit’s a privilege to be a part of them. I always wanted to come back because I loved doing the firstone. I loved what it said about people and how they’re not always what you think they are andnot always what you assume.” Taking on the reins to direct the much-anticipated follow-up to Maleficent, Disney enlists theexpertise of Norwegian film director Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Men TellNo Tales, Kon-Tiki). He looks back at how Disney created something truly unique andhumanized a villainous character to make it relatable to fans of all ages.
“With any story, I look at the emotional core, the heart of the story,” Rønning says. “One of thereasons the first Maleficent was so successful is because it had a very strong and relatableemotional journey for the audience, and in our story Aurora is basically moving out, which issomething all parents dread, and that’s exactly how Maleficent feels.” Mistress of Evil sees Maleficent realizing her true powers and fighting for the love of her ownkind as she and Aurora are pulled in different directions by impending nuptials, unexpectedallies, and dark new forces at play. SM Cares – Walk For Life

Thousands of Senior Citizens are set to participate in various activities lined up from October 1 to 7, as the nation observes the annual Elderly Filipino Week Celebration. Some of the week-long events will be held at select SM Supermalls, and will be led by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Office of the Senior Citizens Affair (OSCA), in partnership with SM Cares, the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of SM Prime Holdings, Inc.

This annual observance falls under Proclamation No. 470 issued on September 26, 1994, which aims to increase public awareness on the different issues concerning the sector. Elderly Filipino Week 2019 will have the theme: “Healthy and Productive Ageing Starts with Me.”

This year’s celebration will kick-off with the annual “Walk for Life” event, which is expected to gather more than 3,000 senior citizens at the Music Hall of the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City. Walk for Life, which promotes the good health and well-being of the elderly, is scheduled on October 1 and will have a parade of seniors around the MOA complex at 6:00AM. The walk will be capped by a program that will feature performances by, and entertainment for the elderly.

On October 2, hundreds of senior citizens will have a chance to relive beautiful memories and enjoy the nostalgic music of the Rockin’ 60s band, at “Seniors Prom”, an event that shows no one is ever too old to dance and have fun in the mall. This will be at the Skydome of SM City North Edsa, and is expected to begin at 4:00PM.

Capping the celebration is the annual, “Talakayan”, a forum that informs the Filipino elderly about legislations concerning the sector. This includes discussing the various benefits that seniors can take advantage of. Talakayan will be led by the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA).

“SM supports the cause of the Filipino elderly, by hosting activities and projects that promote their good health and well-being. Through our CSR Program on Senior Citizens, we wish to let our elderly know that SM will always be their second home, and that there is life after 60 at SM. We also thank DSWD and OSCA for partnering with us for this advocacy,” said Danilo Chavez, Head of SM Cares Program on Senior Citizens.

Apart from mall events, and to further promote their social inclusion, SM offers a Community Service Program for Senior Citizens which invite the elderly to become project participants and do weekend jobs in the mall. This project is in partnership with OSCA.
