Pillars 5 – Health and Wellness in all natural food supplement

Younger people are getting sick with degenerative diseases and it is increasingly becoming common among them to suffer because they are following an unhealthy lifestyle — they do not have the right nutrients that their bodies need from a proper diet and they lack exercise to keep their bodies in top shape.

Responding to this unpleasant trend among people young and old alike, Pillars 5, Inc. aims to foster health and wellness by bringing in all-natural food supplements that help the body to rebuild its immune system and restore it back to optimal health.

Through Pillars 5’s network of home-based entrepreneurs, the company’s passion for bringing back health to people has helped not only those in need to get back their lives from all the unhealthy practices, but also those people who have a dream of building their own businesses and achieve financial freedom. Pillars 5 is not shy to say that they are a multi-level marketing (MLM) company and it has been a big challenge for them, to differentiate themselves from most MLM companies and also to expunge the negative preconceived notions on the industry.

“MLM is an industry with a negative image because of how many of the companies in it has been operating. People have compromised their values and so the industry, as a whole, has been compromised. You will find many people being scammed by companies with less than superior products and dubious business practices,” explains Pillars 5 Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Ramon Garcia.  The lack of regulations for the MLM industry does not help companies who do their best in building a better image for the industry, especially those with products that could really help people.

“On top of that, many people don’t have a good understanding of the MLM industry that they represent and are not able to communicate what their company has to offer. What we have set out to achieve is to build our business based on five core values: Servant Leadership, Humility, Excellence, Integrity, and Stewardship. Those core values are the uncompromising foundation of our business and, we believe, they will serve us very well now and in the future,” Mr. Garcia adds.

They pass on these core values to their home-based entrepreneurs— their distributors— by building a strong relationship and by educating them on how they can “add value” to their customer’s life. For Pillars 5, it is always the best to educate, train, and equip people so they will understand the business, do it the right way and make an honest living. Relationships drive everything else that happens after that and for Pillars 5, it’s about helping and supporting their distributors and their organizations to grow.

“We strive for consistency in what we say and do; staying focused on the company’s vision; staying true to our core values. Over time, this is how people will perceive us differently from the rest of the pack,” Mr. Garcia notes. “We differentiate ourselves from the rest by explaining how we do things differently, i.e., affordable entry into the business, product emphasis, no hard selling, no false claims and promises, no hype.”

When these relationships with their distributors have been solidified and imbibed with the company’s core values, it is almost always easy for the distributors to market their products sourced locally and internationally.

The Pillars 5 business is well-founded on products that are made from all-natural ingredients that can give people peace of mind on their usage of them. Unlike synthetic food supplements in the market, Pillars 5 food supplements come from whole foods. Because they are whole-foods based, the activities of the nutrients in their ingredients are kept intact to complement the natural mechanisms of the human body so that the cells in the body can use these nutrients readily.

Headlining their product line-up is Life Enzyme, a multi-nutrient supplement. It is sourced from 150 fruits, vegetables, and herbs that have been fermented for 365 days. This process magnifies the nutrients in these ingredients and through the beauty of biotechnology, makes them bio-available to the body. It is produced in Taiwan by their partner, Enzyme Village.

Nutrishuz Green Foods Health Drink and My TLC Essential Oils are formulated by their biochemistry expert consultant and produced in the Philippines. Nutrishuz is a delicious veggie drink ideal for people who are always on the go – an energy booster and contains ingredients good at detoxifying and strengthening the immune system. Even kids rave about it.  My TLC, on the other hand, is an aromatherapy product. A great home remedy for common ailments, it is applied topically or inhaled, and is a must to carry in your bag or pocket. It is powerful because it already makes use of the very essence of a plant in addressing health issues.

The Souq Moroccan Argan Oil is sourced from Morocco, comes purely from the Argan nut, and undergoes pressing from organically certified operations.  It is beauty product that rejuvenates the skin, hair, and nails.

Their customers give all positive feedbacks but Mr. Garcia constantly reminds that their products are not cures or treatments for illnesses, but emphasized what Pillars 5 products do very well, “to rebuild and restore.” We help rebuild the immune system so that the immune system will restore the person back to optimal health. Our body is the intelligent healer, not the products. What our products do is give the body what it needs to heal and repair itself.”

Pillars 5 is a company that provides an opportunity not only for those who would want to regain their optimal health back, but also for those who would want to build on their dreams. The road will definitely not be easy, as they face many challenges in building each other’s dreams while at the same time helping change an unhealthy world. Challenges can be met and inspiration ripples through others, motivating them to push on. “We are in the throes of a health revolution and we want to lead it,” Mr. Garcia says.

Cebuana Lhuillier Insures One Million Filipinos for National Pilipino Protektado Day

One million Filipinos officially joined the country’s rally to be a fully-insured nation as Cebuana Lhuillier—the Philippines’ leading microfinancial company—provides free microinsurance through its National Pilipino Protektado Day campaign.

Helping Filipinos be more disaster-resilient and prepared against various calamities, Cebuana Lhuillier has declared July 21 as the National Pilipino Protektado Day as part of the company’s advocacy to build disaster-resilient communities and help the Insurance Commission achieve its vision of protecting 80% of the Filipinos with microinsurance by 2020.

“For the past years, we’ve been constantly just introducing new and innovative products and services to the public to be able to help them be financially included. This time, with our National Pilipino Protektado Day campaign, we decided to take a bolder step and took the initiative to really touch ground with those who are most vulnerable to calamities and directly offer them free microinsurance as a new way for them to be secured,” Cebuana Lhuillier President and CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier said.

In partnership with Pioneer Insurance and with the help of various public and private organizations, free microinsurance were given out across the Philippines, prioritizing the most vulnerable communities, families and individuals from the marginalized sector.

Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions General Manager Jonathan Batangan reiterates that National Pilipino Protektado Day is only one of the company’s many endeavors in its push for disaster resilience. “National Pilipino Protektado Day is a great milestone in our disaster preparedness campaign. But after insuring one million Filipinos, we are on to more initiatives that will help us promote microinsurance and foster disaster resiliency. We are introducing an app, a microinsurance organization, and later on, a website–all designed to ultimately promote the welfare of Filipinos,” he said.

Cebuana Alerto App Reinforcing its disaster resilience advocacy further, Cebuana Lhuillier has also officially launched Cebuana Alerto during the culminating event. An android app that harnesses the digital mobile platform, Cebuana Alerto is designed to provide real-time vital information about disasters within the Philippines.

Equipped with an interactive technology that allows users to share updates in areas affected by any disaster, the Cebuana Alerto app features an alert system that sends notifications to the user in the event of disasters such as typhoon, earthquake, fire, and flood. It has live newsfeeds that show the latest updates from third-party government agencies including the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDDRMC) for weather updates, the Department of Education (DEPED) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for school suspension announcements, and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for information on traffic and road conditions. It also informs the users about Cebuana Lhuillier’s various insurance products and services which they can also purchase immediately online through the app.

Furthermore, the app also includes a “Safe Button” special feature that will automatically notify and send an “I AM SAFE” SMS message to the intended recipient about the user’s current state during a disaster.

MIAAPI

Simultaneously, Cebuana Lhuillier also led the formation of the Microinsurance Agents Association of the Philippines, Incorporated (MIAAPI)—an organization founded to promote the interests and welfare of microinsurance agents nationwide.

MIAAPI interim Board Members include ASEAN Insurance Council Head Michael Rellosa, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) RFPA Asia Senior Adviser Dante Portula, Pioneer Insurance VP Geric Laude, Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines Past President Enrique Abellana, Philippine Insurers Club Treasurer Edgardo David, RBAP Coordinator Gay Mapano, Eternal Plans SAVP Jumer Lecetivo, Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation Executive Trustee Atty. Cesar Vidal, and CLIS General Manager Jonathan Batangan.

Moreover, Cebuana Lhuillier is also set to launch an online platform for insurance donations called OurHelp later this year. Connecting donees in the Philippines and donors from all over the world through a dedicated website, this crowdfunding website further aims to provide quality insurance protection awarded to the most vulnerable sectors in the form of premium donation from socially aware enterprises.

Prior to the culmination of the National Pilipino Protektado Day, Cebuana Lhuillier kicked off its disaster resilience advocacy by mounting and leading the highly-commended “2016 READY: The Role of Microinsurance in Building Disaster Resilient Communities” forum last January. A series of roadshows in key cities such as Baguio, Cebu, and Davao immediately followed to cascade the Forum’s learnings. Simultaneously, Cebuana Lhuillier launched during the road shows the Alagang Cebuana Plus Gold or ACP Gold—an improved version of the company’s premiere microinsurance product that already includes a microlife component underwritten by PhilamLife. ACP to date has covered more than six million Filipinos.

A Greater Quality of Life

Growing up in an impoverished post-war Taiwan, Johnson Health Tech founder, Peter Lo knew that following one’s dreams would require hard work, ambition, and a true entrepreneurial spirit that, 40 years later, has become the core of our business.

It was 1975. With the idea that building his own business would be the key to long-term success, a determined Lo hand wrote about 2,000 letters to American companies to offer support and services for their manufacturing needs. He received only 2 responses. One, an exercise equipment called IVANKO, asked if Lo could manufacture barbells. With his first order of $400 for 200 barbell pieces. Lo created Johnson Metal. While learning the skills and knowledge necessary for barbell manufacturing. Lo began to understand the individual and societal benefits of fitness equipment and wanted to foster his commitment to health and well being around the world.

By the 1980’s, Lo’s barbell business has expanded to the cardio fitness space. Johnson Health Tech became the original equipment manufacturer for numerous industry leaders including Trek, Schwinn, Omron, True and Universal among others. In 1996, Johnson Health Tech’s first brand efforts was spun off by the Trek Fitness management team – Vision Fitness- with the idea that the specialty fitness channel, still a small market at that time, would see immense growth in the future. While higher-end cardio products were too expensive and mass products were too low-quality for most fitness enthusiasts at the time, Johnson Health Tech was to find the “sweet spot” by offering exceptional quality at a more affordable price.

With a knack for spotting major trends in the fitness and manufacturing world to meet today’s consumer needs, Johnson Health Tech’s business more than doubled within just three years. In 1998, Johnson Health Tech introduced Horizon Fitness to bring higher quality and durability to the typically lower-end sporting goods/mas-market channel. Three years later, Johnson Health Tech launched Matrix Fitness line of products to the commercial fitness channel.

Throughout its gradual but massive growth, Johnson Health Tech has also established itself as a true pioneer of product innovation, from the Matrix hybrid bike to the first folding elliptical, to perfecting the eddy current magnetic brake system. Many of the technologies invented for the Johnson Health Tech machines have now become industry standards. From the beginning, an investment in key technologies to increase quality and add value has been a key priority of Johnson Health Tech.

Currently Johnson Health Tech is the largest fitness manufacturer in Asia and the third-largest manufacturer in the world. With a product portfolio covering all fitness channels and markets, including Matrix, Vision and Horizon. Johnson’s global network consists of manufacturing facilities in Shanghai and Taiwan, with Research & Development centers in North America, Shanghai and Taiwan. We are among the industry’s fastest-growing manufacturers, and with 24 wholly-owned subsidiaries, a service network of 60 countries, and 315 retail stores, allowing us better reach and to efficiently serve the needs of our customers around the globe.

This 2016, Johnson Health Tech (JHT), is proud to announce the establishment of their twenty-third wholly owned subsidiary in the heart of the Makati Business District, the leading financial and central business district of the Philippines.

“Johnson Health Tech is extremely excited to have an established home in one of the most dynamic cities in Southeast Asia. As a direct subsidiary, we can bring a number of significant benefits to our customers across both commercial and home use fitness segments. With JHT’s industry-leading product portfolio and strength in global R&D and manufacturing, paired with our local team of highly trained professionals, we can provide turn-key solutions for all fitness and wellness related needs. Here in Manila, we want to be known as JOHNSON HEALTH TECH PHILIPPINES, INC.”, said Mr. Katsuya Ito, the Japanese-Australian nationale spearheading JHT Philippines’ – Team Manila. Prior to this appointment, President Ito served as a Regional Sales Manager for JHT’s Taiwan corporate headquarters, and head of Overseas Sales Development for Fujiiryoki (Fuji Medical Instruments), a leading Japanese massage chair manufacturer.

The subsidiary will serve both the commercial market, including fitness clubs, condominiums, corporate gyms, colleges, and government projects; as well as the home use market, where the subsidiary’s primary focus will be to aggressively develop a corporate-owned retail store network across Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

The Philippines’ first military-inspired obstacle race is back this May and it promises an all newchallenging and push-your-self-to-the-limit treat for the fearless Guerilla Race participants.Happening this 21-22 of May 2016, the Guerilla Race runners will face the historical, dauntingwilderness and off-track slopes of Corregidor.

Race Director Lt. Col. Dennis Bumanglag believes that the new race route will surely surprisefrequent Guerilla Racers. This is the 6th Guerilla Race and racers frequent the event because it isnot something that “you-run-once-you’ve-run-them-all” type of race. Runners prepareexcessively for this race. They do their home work, learn lessons from the previous races andcreate strategies for the next. This year, The Guerilla Race team decided to give them a littlesurprise with a route that is not familiar to them.

The Guerilla Race team decided to bring the obstacle race to Corregidor not only for its race andobstacle worthy trails and route but more importantly, for its historical value in which theGuerillas fought the country’s freedom from its oppressors with their sweat, blood and future.Free the country or die trying. During the Japanese occupation of the islands in World War II,there was an extensive Philippine resistance movement, which opposed the Japanese withactive underground and guerrilla activity that increased over the years. Fighting the guerrillas –apart from the Japanese regular forces – were the Japanese-formed Bureau of Constabulary (latertaking the name of the old Philippine Constabulary during the Second Republic), Kempeitai (theJapanese military police), and the Makapili (Filipinos fighting for the Japanese). Post-war studiesestimate that around 260,000 persons were organized under guerrilla groups and that membersof anti-Japanese underground organizations were more numerous. Such was their effectivenessthat by the end of World War II, Japan controlled only twelve of the forty-eight provinces. The Battle of Corregidor, fought May 5–6, 1942, was the culmination of the Japanese campaignfor the conquest of the Commonwealth of the Philippines during World War II.

This year’s race is a two-day event set for runners, individual and team, of different distancecategories. The race is divided into four different categories: Day 1 is set for the runners for theGuerilla Sprint which is a 5 km with 12 obstacles waiting for them in the course and the GuerillaWarrior who will conquer the 10 km run with 24 obstacles to face. Day 2 is for the panthers. These are the 21 km runners who are to triumph over the 37 Obstacles. There will also be teamcategory for all the distances (5km, 10km and 21km).

The registration fees are Php1,000 for 5km Sprint, Php 1,300 for 10km Warrior, and Php 1,500for Panthers racekit excluding the ferry fare which can be booked with Sun Cruises and just likeprevious Guerilla Races, part of the proceeds will be donated to the Armed Forces of thePhilippines Educational Benefit System Office (AFPEBSO) to assist the education of theorphans of our soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the service to the country.

Nestlé Health Science encourages Filipinos to opt to be active

The process of ageing begins at birth. Through the decades, science has made tremendous progress in extending human life but there is still a pressing need to prolong our active and healthy years.

As a commitment to helping Filipinos live young longer, Nestlé Health Science recently held the Opt to Be Active media roundtable discussion to share their new discoveries and secrets in nutrition and healthy ageing. Nutritionists and fitness coaches were also present in the event to help attendees assess their nutrition and health status.

Dr. Jimmy Bautista, Medical & Scientific Affairs Lead at Nestlé Health Science and Dr. Marianna Sioson, Section of Nutrition Head at The Medical City, shared how Filipinos can achieve a full and active life by making proactive choices such as maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and keeping the mind active.

In his lecture held at the Manila Diamond Hotel, Dr. Bautista stressed that the human body has two different ages—a chronological age and a biological age.

“People who optimize their health may have a biological age that is 10 years younger than their chronological age,” said Dr. Bautista. “At the same time, the presence of chronic conditions may accelerate the body’s decline, making us biologically older than our chronological age.”

Dr. Sioson, on the other hand, emphasized that it is never too early to assess if we are meeting our energy and nutrient requirements. Since the prevalence of developing malnutrition significantly increases as we grow older, there is a pressing need to start taking nutritionally complete oral supplements to continue to live a young and active lifestyle.

“We want Filipinos to ask themselves if there is a need for them to optimize their health and nutrient intake so that they can achieve a full life,” said Dr. Sioson.

Where nutrition becomes therapy

Filipinos often find themselves caught in a battle between indulging and being healthy and, more often than not, the earlier prevails. This gives rise to lifestyle-related, non-communicable diseases (NCD). In a report by the World Health Organization, NCDs account for 61 percent of total deaths in the country. The organization defines non-communicable diseases as chronic diseases that are not passed from person to person. NCDs are grouped into four main types—cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes.

Simple lifestyle changes like preparing healthy meals and optimizing your nutrient intake can be the body’s best defenses against these diseases.

Nestlé Health Science champions this approach by providing novel ways to bridge the gap between nutrition and therapy. The health science arm of the leading global nutrition, health and wellness company strongly believes that the food we consume on a daily basis is the largest single influence on our health.

“By shifting the way people manage health and nutrition, we have the force to improve lives around the world because beyond medicine, there is nutritional therapy,” said Nestlé Health Science

Country Business Manager Angela Sison. “This is what is considered the point where scientific research meets human insight.”

Formed in 2011, Nestlé Health Science is an innovative and fundamentally different type of health science company that is focused specifically on advancing nutritional therapy to change the course of health.

Hopeless cases no more Immunotherapy drug for advanced stages of lung cancer and melanoma now in the Philippines

The spark of hope has never been brighter for Filipino patients with advanced stages of lung cancer and melanoma. MSD in the Philippines, a leader in oncology research and development just introduced immunotherapy, one of the most innovative cancer treatment methods to date.

One type of immunotherapy called immune checkpoint inhibitors is a form of cancer treatment that prevents the interaction between the immune system’s T-cells and the tumors. When tumors and T-cells interact, a protein found in the tumor called the Programmed Death-Ligand 1 (PD-L1) deactivates T-cells so they become incapable of recognizing and destroying cancer cells. Through immunotherapy, this interaction is blocked so that T-cells can detect and ward off the cancer cells.

In the Philippines, the anti PD-L1 immunotherapy drug Pembrolizumab received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of advanced or metastatic lung cancer and melanoma after failing first-line treatment. In a media roundtable symposium held March 17 in Manila, Dr Gerardo Cornelio, Cancer Institute Head of St. Luke’s Medical Center Global City shared that “Pembrolizumab has the potential to become an integral part of cancer treatment. It has and will be tested across a broad spectrum of cancers.”

Burden of Disease
Cancer is one of the most challenging diseases and annual cases are expected to rise to 22 million within the next two decades. In 2012 alone, there were 14 million new cases reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) with 8.2 million cancer-related deaths. A significant contributor to this statistic is lung cancer, which is the top cause of cancer mortality for both sexes worldwide.
Sadly, incidence from the Philippines is not far off from the global data. According to Globocan 2012, Iung cancer is the second most common cancer in incidence and mortality among Filipino men and women.
As for melanoma, a skin cancer whose risk factors include sun exposure, fair complexion and genetics, around 300 Filipinos are affected annually. Though melanoma is not one of the most common cancers in the country, early diagnosis remains a challenge for most patients.

The good news is that for many cancers there have been significant breakthroughs – from prevention to treatment options – however, the unmet needs remain high.

Durable responses, lower toxicities
Clinical trials have shown immunotherapy’s efficacy in the treatment of advanced lung cancer and melanoma. According to a study published in LANCET, Pembrolizumab showed superior overall survival with less high-grade toxicity for previously treated, PD-L1-positive advanced non-small cell lung cancer. Results of the trials showed that the most common side effects for lung cancer patients receiving Pembrolizumab were decreased appetite, fatigue, nausea, and rash.

Clinical trials also showed that Pembrolizumab has superior anticancer activity in patients with advanced melanoma who failed previous therapies. In terms of safety profile, Pembrolizumab showed a lower incidence of treatment-related adverse events compared to chemotherapy. .

Biomarkers play a key role in patient response

The expression of a certain biomarker in patients’ tumors played an important role in their response to Pembrolizumab. Biomarkers are proteins found in a patient’s tissue, blood or fluids that can help determine the outcome of a patient’s disease or response to medication. Clinical trials have shown that if a patients’ tumors express the biomarker Programmed Death Ligand-1 (PD-L1), patients are more likely to have a better response to the drug.

Hope within reach
“Addressing the rising incidence of cancer is indeed a tough road to embark on. MSD has been dedicating its resources to developing innovative oncology medicines. Pembrolizumab propelled our research efforts to understand of the role of the immune system and the PD-L1 pathway in cancer treatment” said Dr. Beaver Tamesis, President and Managing Director of MSD in the Philippines.
With this immunotherapy finally available in the Philippines, cancer patients need not equate being diagnosed with advanced or metastatic lung cancer or melanomas a death sentence. Thanks to this breakthrough in cancer medication, patients in the Philippines and abroad have a ray of hope and confidence in what used to be a hopeless case.
